This exhibition is curated by postgraduate students from Edinburgh College
of Art who are currently completing their MA Contemporary Art & Contemporary
Art Theory. This course, established in 2001 is situated within the Centre
for Visual and Cultural Studies and remains unique in Scotland. It brings together
ideas and materials from a wide range of disciplines to investigate contemporary
visual practices, cultural theory and organisational praxis.
Grey Matter brings together a broad-spanning group of artists whose selected
works explore in various ways sensory and material communication. Grey Matter
works with the sometimes disparate connections between these works; eschewing
one easy ‘theme’ with which to make neat connections between them.
Each element is allowed to generate its individual discourse and to fire its
own synaptic response. Works which operate not only on the level of visual
art serve to stimulate the senses, inviting the visitor to hear, see, smell
and feel; to read with their senses but to trust their instincts.
